The biggest advantage of traveling with a portable router is having all my friends/family devices simply autoconnect to the saved Wifi network and then joining the router to whatever establishment we might be at. If you have a lot of non-tech folks with you and don't want to keep joining devices individually, this saves a lot of trouble. It has a small network footprint as well: it manifests as a single device and multiplexes that connection to several. It's powered by a simple USB-C connection so it could be powered from the wall, an Anker battery, or even your laptop. While some Pixel phones with 2x2 repeater support can do this too, once that phone leaves the room or runs out of battery, everyone's disconnected. This device is running a nice web UI on top of OpenWRT that gives you full blown router features. I've run this without issue in a cafe, a hotel, the airport, an airplane and none of my party had to bother me about what the local Wifi password was or entering their account info or room number, etc. Also supports VPN and Adguard which I haven't tried yet.

Two issues: First, I did run into 1 hotel that used EAP which Beryl doesn't support (but Slate AX does). In that case, a CAT5 network cable to the WAN solved the issue, though I hear cloning MAC addresses does this too but I couldn't get that to work. Second, there weren't clear instructions on how to connect to a network with a captive portal but you can find examples of this on YouTube if you search with those terms.

But, bottom line, I'm never traveling anywhere without this thing.

A must have I would say if you are traveling, even if you work from coffee shop.

Pros from my point of view:
1. WiFi 6 for a reasonable cost. What kind of internet bandwidth you connect to will matter, but if you connect to a decent bandwidth speeds, this will transmit good network speed.
2. Powers from USB-A or USB-C from my Macbook Pro (I used both USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C cables). This router has USB-C to power it up.
3. It can connect from Wired, Wirless (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz), Cell Modem and Tethering. I tried Wired and Wirelsess and it worked flawlessly.
4. It can transmit in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and has Guest Network also. Just in case you need to share your network with somebody, you do not need to give your main network's password.
5. It has both VPN Client (to route your traffic via VPN Service) and VPN Server (to access your network from remote location). I am using only VPN Client functionality. With SurfShark it works great.
6. I set up VPN Client. When it is turned off and it turned back on, it boots up with VPN, which is great. It has got quite a few modes under VPN Client. The entire traffic goes via VPN, or you can choose based on the target locations, or Client Device. I am using for the entire traffic as I pretty much use this only when I am away from home.
7. As this has OpenWRT, it has lot of plugins and Advanced features that you normally wont see in a router this size and price.
8. This has got Dynamic DNS functionality, just in case you do not have static IP and wanted to use VPN Server functionality in this router. I am not using this feature.
9. You can connect Hard Drive with USB-A to this router and it can work as a Network Storage.
10. It has got lot of other features that I do not use. Ex: AdGuard, Good Cloud etc.
11. I tested this with my power bank that I charge my phones with while traveling. And it works great!
12. This comes with a power supply and adapters to them that work in US, Asia and UK. But I probably stick with using from my laptop's USB slot to power it.

Cons:
1. This is pretty much with any networking device. You need a decent networking knowledge to set the VPN.
2. The VPN Client did not work right out of the box. I had to upgrade the firmware and also go into Advanced features to upgrade all the OpenWRT modules.

Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I would surely recommend this to anybody.

It’s literally perfect with just a few tweaks. Can connect up to 4 different ways to the internet and has even failover/bonding options between them. It’s got ad blocking and wire guard support built in and full tunneling capability that you can configure the hardware switch to turn on or off. Snowden should use this for security…

The one gripe I have is there is no backup configuration option. I enabled too many ad blocking filters and it locked up the device and became unresponsive even after a reboot and I had to factory reset it (heads up, don’t enable all ad blocking filter lists) and there is no backup configuration option. So if this device ever becomes bricked, you have to wipe and start over with all your configuration settings which if you did configure a lot then you will have to go through every setting again. I recommend if you are tinkerer to do all of your tinkering before you start traveling and get the device exactly how you want it and then never touch the web configuration page again. It’s a perfect device otherwise. They give you so many features that you can’t possibly use them all at the same time due to CPU limitations. I think that is better than the opposite where their software can’t utilize the full hardware and you are just overpaying.

Anyways, it’s a perfect travel router with every possible feature to optimize your internet/network experience and the hardware is fast. You can plug many different types of USB devices to it as well, whether it’s a printer, a USB drive for music or movies, or even your cell phone for tethering. You can configure all of your privacy and ad blocking lists. If you configure multiple ways for it to try and connect to the internet, you can custom tailor the failover or bonding as well. It’s so user friendly that you don’t have to configure all of this if you don’t want to but it’s there if you know what you are doing. Get it if you travel a lot. Just spend 2-4 hours researching every option and configuring them and then you never have to worry about privacy or security on the road ever again.

I travel and cruise often. I am an attorney and usually have to work for some portion of my travel, and having internet availability is crucial. I am also creating video content for a youtube channel and my work. When I am working I usually need to have more than one electronic device hooked up at the same time. For cruisers we all know that you pay per device so I am usually switching between devices, and that gets tiring.

I have used several different travel routers (like ravPower and TP-Link) to different levels of success. However, the common factor is that the travel router usually deminishes the signal and speed coming in (and going out) so that even if I hooked up one device the connection speed would drop by more than half. For cruising that meant deathly slow connections.

RavPower made me so frustrated on my last cruise by shutting off and on and disconnecting and reconnecting constantly. I simply couldn't use it. TP-Link works better, but its effectiveness decreases significantly (in speed) when there is a distance between the modem and where I am working, making it useless at times.

I bought the MT3000-Beryl AX because I had an upcoming cruise and had to work a lot, including having a Zoom hearing. I tested it at home and it was amazing, but the home doesn't pose the connection issues found on a cruise ship. I boarded Royal Caribbean's Oasis that uses Starlink (the same ship I used the RavPower on three weeks earlier and about pulled my hair out), hoping it would do well.

This little modem was amazing. Not only did it connect easily to the ship, the download signal was the same as if my electronic device was connected directly. Additionally, the upload speed (not sure how) was almost always better than my phone or laptop. I speed-tested it regularly and often. It was as good or better than my direct connection, and everything worked great. I lowered the resolution on my camera for my zoom hearing and had no issues. I worked in my room, but I could hook the Beryl up to a batter pack and basically be mobile anywhere on the ship. I hooked up 4 devices at once and didn't notice much of a lag for what I was doing.

The modem comes with a bunch of built-in security features.

For a family going on a cruise, this little device will allow you to provide access to all your cabinmates while they are in the cabin. It might solve the issue of needing to get everyone their own internet access (if some people only use the internet on occasion - but not for heavy scrollers).

The only gripe I had was that I wanted to wirelessly dump photos from my iPhone to a card because I have limited storage (and your iPhone doesn't want to back up to iCloud while on the ship even if you have continuous internet access). I know it can do this. I didn't figure out how to do this when I was home and tried to figure it out while on the ship, but there wasn't any real information, even the info Beryl provided (although I might have missed it). I had all the hardware. I tinkered with it but couldn't figure it out. I tried youtube videos or google searches to no avail. I'm sure there is info out there, but it wasn't easy to find.

I give this a 5 Star rating as a travel router. Fast, efficient, secure, and portable! It's a winner!

GL.iNet makes awesome portable routers, and the GL-MT3000 is no exception. You'll need to know a little bit about IP addresses to get it up and running so if you've never configured a network device before this might not be the device for you. However, if you are remotely familiar with networking concepts, this is a really handy and configurable device.

These routers have lots of use cases. You can use them to add a wireless access point to a wired network, or to extend distance to an existing wifi network (a repeater). I was able to use my iPhone and tether it to this router, using it as a wifi router to my iPhone, allowing multiple devices to tether from my iPhone. In this configuration it would also work in a hote -- you can connect it to a hotel's wifi and then connect multiple devices to the router. You can also use the devices wan port to connect in a hotel, using your own router at that point.

The device supports tons of plugins, allowing you to run openvpn, firewalls, and tons of other things on the device. These are more advanced features, but there are plenty of videos and internet posts out there to help you get stuff working.

The device comes with a wall wart power adapter with adapters for lots of different countries, but I was able to power mine from a USB power brick while on the road. The connector on the router is USB-C so powering it is not a problem.

The biggest problem with these units is that they are so configurable that it'll send your mind wandering and before long you'll be purchasing a second one... and then a third... and then...

I got this one for easy access to my home and streaming services offered in the US while traveling.

I primarily use Ubiquiti equipment at home, and VPN in directly from devices, but at times it is better to have a router in between. This especially when you have clients running that are VPN aware and refuse to stream when outside the country. Having this router connect makes it possible to hide the fact of being remote from your devices.

The router connects directly to my Ubiquiti UDMP over WireGuard. OpenVPN is also an option if that is preferred.

The only challenge I had was with name resolution where it had a problem resolving the DNS name of my external interface at home. I nailed it down to the IP address for now and will troubleshoot at a later point.

The router does also not support anything that could be used for band steering (802.11k/v/r) so I have set it up with two different ESSIDs for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Also not a big deal for something primarily used as a travel router.

Another upside is that it uses USB-C for power so you can use a smaller power adapter than the one that comes with it. Anything that provides 3A@5V is fine.

Finally. My use case is just one of many. This router would be perfectly fine being the primary router for a smaller home. It can be used as a plain access point, range extender etc.

I am so far very happy with this purchase as an addition to my travel equipment.

I have been paying full price for all my GL-iNet products therefore this is an unbased review. I have been using 2 x GL-X750 (Spitz) 4G mobile routers during my travels in Mexico, and many countries in Europe, and have 2 x GL-B2200 (Velica) routers in a mesh configuration at (one of my) home(s). I'm a long time fan of GL-iNet, and the GL-MT3000 (beryl AX) under review is no exception. I simply love it.

I have been using it for a month now in the USA with a COX router in bridge mode, the Beryl AX being my "main" router. I live in a heavily congested condo environment with around 30 WiFi APs visible in both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz band. With the transmission power set to "Medium" I have full coverage in a single story 900sqft condo. With WiFi6 I have no interference with any of the other WiFis in the neighborhood.

I truly appreciate the flexible configuration.

1) DNS over TLS via Cloudflare works flawlessly;

2) Network Storage using a 256GB Samsung EVO USB3.0 thumb drive formatted to ExFAT works both with DLNA enabled and also via SMB using Apple and Android devices. On that note - Initially a tried using an external SSD drive in a USB3.0 case with a short cable connecting to the Beryl AX, but that resulted in the 2.4GHz WiFi shutting down - so use thumb drive only.

3) VPN I haven't configured yet, but I tried that with one of the Spitz-es with Nord VPN, and it worked flawlessly from Mexico, configured to a San Jose, CA IP address.

4) The Option switch can be configured to switch VPN On/Off in case there is a connection issue via the VPN service.

5) The Wire Guard option is brilliant for accessing your network storage externally.

This little router is doing the heavy lifting of a lot more expensive NAS drive and router for a fraction of the price.
