5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Choice for Travel: GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) Travel WiFi Router Review
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2024
Color: OpalVerified Purchase
I bought the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) to ease internet sharing on family trips and found it to be a generally good travel router. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Performance: Offers dual-band speeds with up to 300 Mbps on 2.4GHz and 867 Mbps on 5GHz, adequately handling both basic and high-bandwidth tasks.

Portability: The router is lightweight and compact, ideal for travel.

Connectivity and Security: Includes two Gigabit LAN and one WAN port for fast connections and supports various VPN services and IPv6, ensuring secure and private internet access.

User Interface: Setting up and using the router is straightforward, thanks to an excellent user interface.

One downside is the power adapter's non-detachable USB cable, which could be more flexible. Overall, the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 is a reliable choice for travelers looking for a secure and portable internet solution, though it may not stand out in a crowded market.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Pry WiFi!

Got this for low-maintenance shareable VPN when traveling. Setup and configuration is a breeze through a very well-developed web control panel with more capabilities than most people need. I wasn't expecting it when I bought it, but it supports Wireguard, so I was streaming HD video from my home server on the other side of the planet.

I've had it work off a hotel's wired LAN connection for the two weeks I was there. Works well off wifi, even had it connected to a Google Mesh network at a home rental for a weekender. It can stay in my locked bag at a cafe, powered by a portable battery (it needs 3A). It passes captive portals through to your device for authentication.

The control panel options are deep. There's the standard stuff you expect, like seeing what devices are connected and being able to manage them. There's a firewall and port forwarding and DMZ. It's an OpenVPN client and can become an OpenVPN server. Same with Wireguard. Can set up VPN routing (e.g., allow certain connections to not use VPN). It runs OpenWRT so you can install its plugins. Attach USB storage and it can serve files (SMB). You can SSH into it (assuming you can reach port 22 from outside). Dynamic DNS so it can be reached by domain name URL. Like I said, way more than what I got it for but glad it's there.

It's got just enough ethernet ports for 2 wired devices, and WiFi depends on the type of usage, but handled multiple streaming devices for me. So could work for solo traveler up to a small family. I love its compact form factor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my Behringer X-Air 16 Digital Mixer

The WiFi that's built into my Behringer X-Air 16 Digital Mixer is great or testing and for small groups, but in larger venues, it has a tendency to drop the signal to my iPad. I bought this GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) Secure Travel WiFi Router and now my signal is strong and secure using the 5ghz band!
Fantastic router! It's inexpensive, easy to set up and has great performance! A Must Have for this use!

Good One
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent router, AP, repeater, VPN, packed with features

Oh wow. This unit's a gem. It has so many features in a small package. With Wireguard VPN (and OpenVPN) built-in, one can bring in one's own configs or use those of other providers. Excellent gain and transmission on 2.4 and 5GHz. There's an excellent, deep level of granularity and customization available, even though you might not need to use it. It's good to know it's there and works great too.

Use the Luci admin panel for open-source custom router rom, it's easy, and browse the 1000s of apps one can install, including DNSCrypt and DOH and lots of adblocking. It has its own admin interface too. It's almost like also having a Pihole in the same wifi unit. I'm thinking of tying in a whole series of LAN devices into it not just for travel to have uniform adblocking and encryption throughout. Be sure to make backups as you go along, because as with advanced features, it's possible for errors to arise. It can also be a plug in and go box, without getting into all its features.

The tech support is excellent, with help built in to the admin panels, and documentation on the website. Chat and phone is also available.

5 out of 5 stars, all around. Great price too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly in hotel rooms

A great find. Router works perfectly and as advertised. I travel with my furry friend and am always concerned with leaving him in the room by himself when I can’t take him with me to places that do not allow pets. I use the Eufy camera as my eyes, the product does not allow for setup and login to a hotel WiFi. I got this gem and was successfully able to connect and add the Eufy cam without any issues. It is travel size small and lightweight. Does not get warm and is safe to use. Signal annd connectivity is consistent. Have not experienced any sort of disruption during us. Includes all sorts of advance settings for those who is knowledgeable in how to set it up. Easy to use and setup. Extremely happy. Must buy for anyone who travels with pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for Private Network Setup in Rental Apartments
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2024
Color: OpalVerified Purchase
I recently purchased the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) Secure Travel WiFi Router, and it has been a game-changer for my rental apartment, which comes with public free WiFi. This router allows me to establish a private and secure network for all my smart home devices, providing the peace of mind that my personal data and devices are protected.

The AC1200 dual-band capability ensures a fast and reliable connection, even with multiple devices connected. Setting up the router was straightforward, and the gigabit Ethernet ports are a great addition for wired connections. If you’re looking for a simple and effective way to create a secure private network in a rental with public WiFi, the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 is a fantastic choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decent entry level "travel router"
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2024
Color: OpalVerified Purchase
This is an inexpensive (entry level) travel router. I got it to provide a single "router" for all my internet connected devices while traveling. While I haven't yet made any trips with this router (my first such trip is scheduled for next week), I have setup and tested this router using my home WiFi (and yes this router can share my home WiFi to devices behind this router).

The reason I say this is an entry level router, is due to the small amount of RAM and flash (storage) space in this specific model. And this small amount of RAM and storage does limit what this router can do. For example, the expandable "open source" firmware this router uses can (with the correct firmware extension downloaded) block many advertisements at the router itself (so all of your devices behind the router get the advantages of this ad-blocking ability). However, that "ad-blocking" feature won't work on this specific model of router (even though the router's firmware theoretically supports it), because that firmware extension uses more RAM and storage than this specific router has available. Another limitation I ran into is that quad9 DNS (9.9.9.9) is only supported when you do your queries "in the clear", to actually get encrypted DNS queries you have to instead use cloudflare (1.1.1.1).

Still, this router does appear to do the basic task of connecting once to a WiFi source and then sharing that internet with your various travel devices. So this router easily does the basic tasks you expect from a "travel router". Just keep in mind that if you really want those advanced features available on some routers, you will have to buy a much more expensive router (with much more builtin hardware than this specific router has available).

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfect to repeat wifi for hotels / Xfinity etc
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2024

This unit is an upgrade to the GL.iNet GL-MT300N. I used the GL.iNet GL-MT300N for connecting to Xfinity hotspots to use xfinity anywhere. I also use this for hotel hotspots where a login is required making wifi cameras not useable. With this device you simply connect all of you wifi devices to it and have the device connect to the wifi hotspot you are visiting. Once this device connects using shared credentials all of your devices are online. Stop somewhere and see an xfinity hotspot, again connect this device and all of your devices are online. Of course you need an xfinity account to use the xfinity anywhere feature. The device provides for great connectivity options when you think about it. I had to upgrade to this device since Xfinity stopped broadcasting on Wireless N networks. This one connects to G as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Work In Cybersecurity and I Own This and Routers Like It
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2024

WiFi while traveling is usually either expensive or privacy invasive, or both. Security is also an issue, at home you are the administrator and at work you have IT and Cybersecurity working to make the WiFi safe. Safety is not always the goal when WiFi networks are setup at hotels or in airports. On the plane, yes, that is a safe network, but you pay (and this device can help you with that.) At the hotel, depending on where and how much you spent, you have a range of networks that could be a very clean meraki setup with your AP on it's own VLAN to a flat network with DNS rebinding and all sorts of logging and injection. This device can protect you from that. You just need to connect it to the hotel WiFi, then you have your own private network you admin. Also it supports VPNs, and using DoH for DNS. Great product. My coworker bought one after I showed him mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Router! If you are looking to travel and access your home network look no further!!!

I got this product for the purpose to be able to work while I travel. In this case when I go visit family in other states. This allows me to connect to my home network using VPN's and show my home IP address while traveling. I do connect both my mobile phone and laptop. Please note that you must also have a router that is VPN capable at home in order to use the VPN function from this travel router. You can use the GL.iNet GL-MT6000(Flint 2) WiFi 6 Router or in my case I use a TP-Link ER605 V2 Wired Gigabit VPN Router. The difference is that there are videos that show how easy it is to set up a VPN with WireGuard with GL.iNet routers but these are more expensive and will run about $160. On the other hard, the TP-Link may be a little harder to figure out using Youtube videos but not impossible and will only run you about $60. Also the GL.iNet has wifi and the TP-Link does not. Over all the Travel Router is a must have for even just travel in airports, hotels, or any public space where you can just connect to a VPN paid subscription and protect your information from others.
