5.0 out of 5 stars RT-AX86U Is a Excellent Router, Super easy to setup
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2021
Pattern Name: RouterStyle: AX5700 | 2.5G PortVerified Purchase
1. Setup is a breeze and he easiest, If your previous is a ASUS router, Save the config file and load it, into the this router and all your connected devices are up and running.. you change the settings to whatever you want too.. after, No need to go and change network password on 100 devices. Everything from your older.. Including all the registered devices.. network Ip, parental control.. etc (saves a ton of time)
2. Those who are having trouble connection issue/disconnecting with this RT-AX86U router after IOS 14.2 updates and >, For Apple Devices like Iphone 7 or > models and IpadAir2 or > models.. Please change the following, Under WIFI SSID's from your Device.. Press the circled "i" next to each SSID you are trying to connect too or connected too.. and Turn the "Private Address" option "ON", Should fix the the connection issue.. But this not an issue on other apple devices other than Iphones7/> and IpadsAirt2/>
3. Apple started using different MAC address for each SSID you connect too starting from update OS14.1 and > .. If you have a MAC filter turned on your router to connect to your network you may have to register each MAC Address ID generated by your apple device for each SSID (2.4 and 5.0GHz) and If you have multiple "WiFi(SSID) names" or multiple Spots you may also need to add all different MAC ID generated by your apple device connecting to each SSID's from your Device.. To find each Unique MAC address, Press the circled "i" next to each SSID you are trying to connect too.. and Turn the "Private Address" option "ON" and you will see, a unique MAC Address.. Add that MAC address to your MAC Filter to allow the device to connect to each SSID, should fix your apple device connection issue.. Remember "Apple" is well secured, but painful to introduce this new feature.
4. Overall the router is strong and good, Some old devices may have hard time connecting too WP3 and WIFI6 enabled.. I would say open up your "Guest" Next work and down grade from WPA3 to WPA2 or down grade from WIFI6 down, with restrictions.. Should resolve the internet connectivity issues.
5. But some devices can still support "WIFI6" and work stable and should not have no issues.. If you are gamer, ensure to upgrade your WiFi card to support WiFi 6 on that device.. Otherwise this router will block you left and right, When you apply mods and port forwarding with your friends, But for normal browsing and streaming from paid/subscription sources, this router should work seamlessly without any issues.
6. Parental Control timing has some serious bug.. MAC ID filtering is not supported on "IPV6", Since IPV6 use a very long "MAC ID", MAC ID Filter only works on "IPV4" setup... Need an software update to fix it.. You can only restrict devices by MAC ID address on IPV4 setup..When setting up Parental Control, Found a Series bug defined the hours in the software, Which has 25 hours a day/2 entries for 12:00am (24:00 hours and 00:00 hours both same). Which causes the software to choke and fail, Has some serious bug/headache issues.. "ASUS" please fix this, This causes the parental control/restriction to NOT work correctly, due to 24:00 hour and 00:00 entries being the same, confusing the software time management to fail miserably.. The work around is to have "2 entries" for each device.. one entry for example "Device A" should have time restriction from 20:00 to 24:00 (Midnight) and the same "Device A" should have 2nd entry from 00:00 to 06:00 for the parental control to may be work properly, Sometime it works correctly, still unstable and in testing... It is a serious bug.. (The drop down options for each device entry is confusing with "disable", "block" and "time", Please provide help.. Recent new firmware update, allows 15 minute increments, which is nice finally they added this feature, but could not able to test it, Due to two 24 hour entries in the time bug.. earlier software options, did not allow 15 mins increments now it does.
7. Since Apple devices keep changing their MAC addresses randomly by SSID.. Not just this router, any router in the market will be challenged, to restrict web sites and time restrictions, instant messaging and Internet usage for Kids, due to multiple MAC ID's for each SSID's.. Use an external parental control app and control it using Master "Apple Id".
8. Good Area Coverage, So far works great, no issues.. All features and there are lot of apps offered by ASUS.. Still I am exploring.. No comment, Until I Use or Master their free apps offered on the app stores..
9. Great and Good options like Old but robust NAS SERVER, MEDIA SERVER, USB, Printer, VPN etc and new dedicated 2.5GBps LAN PORT, Dedicated RJ-45 Game Port,options.. like most of the features in their previous predecessor models.. Hope the future updates will bring more stability to some of the unstable software bugs.. Overall the router is stable and good performing device. Little expensive for a Broadcom 1.8Ghz BCM4908 Chip.. Others offer a snapdragon 865 processor for $100.. May not have a good UI interface.. but WIFI6 and other basic features..
10. Registering this device on ASUS Website.. Seems to be a little challenging as well, When you browser for Router models on ASUS website.. you see all different routers are under "Network" Category... But when registering, You will NOT find it under "NETWORK" Category, But Instead you will find it under "WIFI" Category.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Beast Solved All My Problems
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2024
Pattern Name: RouterStyle: AX5700 | Upgraded CPU | 2.5G PortVerified Purchase
Upgraded from previous Asus router RT-AC87R that was probably bought around 2015. With so many more devices connected, the old router simply didn't have enough horse power. Connectivity was suffering, with devices falling off or taking forever to connect. Also, started noticing buffering on video streaming.
Have been running the new Asus router (RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700)) for a full week now, and am totally impressed. All the connectivity issues are gone, and the range is amazing! I have a large house with multiple devices OUTSIDE (cameras, light bulbs, outlets - all from Wyze) and they all stay connected now with no problems whatsoever. I have one camera running on an extender, but doubt if I even need it anymore. All devices inside connect no problem, and wi-fi range even upstairs/downstairs in remote corners is no issue at all.
Paired with an updated Motorola modem (MB8600) I got last year, I am now (finally) able to take advantage of the 1G internet connection coming into my house. As you can see on the picture from my phone (!), I am running at 950 Mbps down and 50+ Mbps up. Truly amazing! Previously, my hardwired PC was lucky to get to 550-600 Mbps, and my phone on wi-fi was WAY lower.
Setup was a breeze (especially since I was familiar with Asus already), and the phone app works really well, especially now that you can connect remotely now even when away from home to monitor. I am not that techy (slightly above average), so if I can figure this out, so can you. Just keep your wi-fi name and password the same, and all your devices will reconnect quickly as soon as you fire up the new router....presto! I was worried I was going to have to reconnect 60+ devices, but they all connected fine. Worst case, you may have to restart a couple devices which is fine - just didn't want to have to go through entire setup process.
If you're an over-analyzer like me, stop your search and just go with this model. You won't be disappointed! I purchased in January 2024 and did not receive any compensation for the product or this review. I rarely write reviews, but was so impressed and pleased with this product that I wanted to share!

This is my second Asus router. I upgraded from an AC-3200. I have a large home and this routers coverage is great. Love the fact its got an integrated VPN server and with the updated firmware true VLAN support. Asus has built in AI Protection that protects against malware and viruses and some pretty decent parental controls that I don't use. The guest network pro tool is great to quickly create an IOT network to keep cameras and washing machines away from your main stuff. Asus makes great stuff that lasts.

I Love ASUS Router They are reliable and consistent With Internet speeds and easy to set up . Through my provider, I get one gig on the down . This router can also get 2.5 gigs There’s a port for that as well. It has Wi-Fi 6 . I run like 27 devices on this router and it handles it with ease . The router I own is the Asus AX86U pro . My old router was the Asus AC86U Which I had for two years and it was a awesome router as well but the new router AX86U Pro Is a better router with more up-to-date features and a little bit better speeds than the old one that I had . I’m a gamer and I play Competitively on Playstation5 as well and I’m getting great speeds on the Playstation . Hope this honest review helped Make your decision !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Upgraded from ASUS RT-AC68P 2000 sq ft 1 story home
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2021
Pattern Name: RouterStyle: AX5700 | 2.5G PortVerified Purchase
I had an ASUS RT-68P which was solid for 5 years but the slow NAS speeds were really getting to me. Also I noticed some quirks once my home slowly added smart devices going from 20 to 50 devices.
I didn't use the utility that copies settings from old ASUS routers to new ones. I just entered the same SSID and password and I never needed to input the password from my WiFi devices to use the new router. I did have to replug the power for my blink sync modules but that's it. I have 50 devices and will keep adding more as my home has more smart devices. Wired I have it connected to 2 switches with a TV, 4 PCs, Fire TV recast, TV Cube, AV receiver, IP work Phone. Wireless I have 3 PCs, 1 wifi printer, 1 wifi scanner, 3 android phones, 4 fire tablets, 2 Fire Cubes, 1 Fire Stick, Wyze Cams, TP link plugs, LG and Samsung appliances, garage door opener, thermostat, Ring Video doorbell pro, Exterior blink cameras connected to 2 sync modules, Roomba & RoboRock vacuum, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Google Smart Display, and GoVee under cabinet lights. I'm still using WPA2-Personal though. If you go higher some of your old or cheapy devices might not connect.
With my previous router the outer most rooms had some connection problems and computers took a while to connect on boot once in a while. Now the signal is very strong and connected right away. I actually had to turn down the wifi power down a notch from performance to good because the signal was bleeding out to my neighbors and onto the street. I used Wifi analyzer to check signal strength.
As for NAS performance I have an 8TB WD desktop USB harddrive and on my old ASUS RT-68P and the 1Ghz CPU would max out at 100% while only getting 25MBPs (200Mbps) file transfers. With the RT-AX86U the quad-core 1.8 Ghz CPU showed 50% on 2 cores at the most and was getting 110MBps (880Mbps) fie transfers. The same speed as if I plugged in hard-drive to my computer and copied the files. I've read some reviews saying NAS performance was slow but maybe they were using a slow source drive. Sometimes I copied from a notebook hard-drive and would get 20Mbps but I ran task manager and the hard-drive utilization was 100% so the limiting factor was the source hard-drive speed. If I copy from my fast desktop hard-drive or SSD I got the full 110MBps.
I was planning on using my old ASUS router as an AI Mesh node but the signal is so strong on the RT-AX86U that I don't have to. I don't have any Wifi6 devices so I turned it off. DongKnowsTech suggested turning off Smart Connect (automatically puts devices on 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz band). When the router automatically updated firmware the Smart Connect was disabled by default. If you are having WiFi problems you should try to turn that off.
Please see Dong Knows website for his in depth reviews and reply in the comments. He tests routers better than other review sites and is very responsive to your questions in comments.
I'm glad I bought this router. It should last another 5 years or more unless I really need WifI 6E. At retail price it's a really good router. Probably why it was sold out everywhere at retail price after Thanksgiving. I've never seen it discounted except with a lame bundle. If you have a 2,500 sq ft home and use the internet a lot and/or have a lot of smart home devices this is a solid investment. You are getting good value for really good processor and wifi chips with proven and often updated firmware compared to TP link or Netgear. Having built in Trend-Micro malicious site blocking, 2 way IPS protection, and infected device protection protection at the router level and a traffic analyzer is a huge plus.

I live in a 4000 square-foot house and the coaxial modem is located on the second floor at the back side far from most of my wireless connected devices. This product helped achieve seamless wireless connectivity to all my devices throughout the house no matter where it is. No more lost connections and streams!!! The app works really well for first time configuration and setting up prioritization of what type of Internet data gets priority service. Very useful product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock solid connectivity. Seamless integration with other iMesh devices
Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2024
Pattern Name: RouterStyle: AX5700 | Upgraded CPU | 2.5G PortVerified Purchase
In 2021 I purchased an Orbi system (RBK753 or RBK753S which is the membership club equivalent) and it worked fine for a while, but it had one flaw that used to drive me crazy: Whenever there was a need to reboot the router, it would take 1 to 2 DAYS for my 10 nest cameras to sync and for all of them to be online again. After putting up with this for 2 years I had enough and after 2 decades of an exclusive relationship with Netgear, I decide to open myself up and go back to the router dating scene to see what had changed in 2 decades. To my surprise, apparently Netgear is no longer king, and this particular ASUS router was included in the top 5 router rankings on every publication and established website out there. Sometimes it would be ranked #1 sometimes #3 but it would always be in the top 5. So I purchased it. Going from a Netgear Orbi system with 5 satellites (6 if you count the router itself), I was curious as to how much of my 4000sqft home a single router could cover. My goal was, if possible, to do away with Mesh systems. Netgear also had a flaw where despite broadcasting the same SSiD on all satellites, some clients still could differentiate between the one they originally connected to and an identical satellite broadcasting the same SSiD in other parts of the house. Some of my light switches would even see the same SSiD listed several times despite technically being the same network.
So I installed the ASUS RT-AX86U PRO and even though it didn’t cover the entirety of the 4000sqft, it did cover a solid 50%. Technically I was able to see and connect to its SSiD from anywhere in the house but in some far corners the signal would not be a solid or steady. I knew I was asking too much of a single router since my previous Orbi alone with no satellites could barely cover 20% of my home so the fact that this one was pushing 50% it was a huge accomplishment. So I decided to order another RT-AX86U PRO and add it to the first one as an iMesh node.
In case you’re not familiar AiMesh is the proprietary ASUS technology that allows you to seamlessly add other ASUS products as Mesh network nodes to your main router. Just the future proofing benefits alone make this a brilliant concept. So once I added the second RT-AX86U PRO to AiMesh, with 2 clicks, the remaining part of the house that I was having issues with now had a rock solid signal. Not only that but the 4 LAN ports on that second router acting as a node were active! And allowed me to hardwire several legacy devices in that room for unparalleled speed. I still had 2 nest cameras in a far corner of the property that were actually out of the house in my backyard and only operated in the 2.4 ghz range and were struggling to connect to the network (understandable since now I was not only asking my router to broadcast successfully at that distance but also to penetrate siding and insulation and the odd slab of concrete which are tougher for a wireless signal to penetrate than the drywall inside the house). At 200 bucks a pop my wallet was a bit reticent to add a 3rd RT-AX86U PRO, so I settled for an ASUS RP-AX58 AiMesh extender. At only 80 bucks, if this thing really did what it said it did, which was integrating itself into my AiMesh network, talk to the other routers in the fast 5ghz channel and rebroadcast that data in the far corner of the house both in the 5Ghz and also in the 2.4 GHz frequency that is the only one my aging nest cameras could comprehend, it was a no brainer. And guess what: It did. So using 2 RT-AX86U PRO routers, one as a main and the second one as an AiMesh node, and one ASUS RP-AX58 AiMesh extender, I was now able to flawlessly cover my 4000sqft home. Something that with the Netgear Orbi it used to take 6 satellites to do. And the best part, if I ever needed to reboot the router, all my nest cameras would come back online within a minute. Not 2 days.
I am extremely happy with my purchase and considering the 2 routers I just added to my network are top of the line, I expect to be able to continue to purchase the latest and greatest ASUS router every few years and use all existing hardware as AiMesh nodes.

When I say it, it's true and that's all you need to know. Lol kidding. But I have put serious thought into my home routers for decades. Used to be a Netgear fan but they let me down too many times.
Asus is absolutely where it's at. Need to bypass Starlink easily and without issue? Asus. Need mesh network, no issues? Asus. Need remote access? Asus.
I find this router to be the perfect balance in what you get for your money. After this, it feels like your not getting more, because it's likely beyond your needs.
Also pay attention because there is a point when upgrading tech that you get less for more. Ie: 20 % more router for 50% more money. This is king and not many Need much more.
I install security cameras and use a lot of network hardware. If I want easy, I choose Asus.
I like spending less time teaching my clients how to use their equipment. That gives me more time for everything else.

My old router that was the previous model was starting to have issues keeping my devices connected. Out of the box and a bit later I was able to copy my settings from the old Asus to the new Asus router, back up and running perfect! My only thing with these routers is it seems to need to reboot on just about any change in the settings, but many other do that as well, and really how often do you really need to change the settings? Plus a bonus, I was able to use my old router in Mesh mode on this router which gives me a bit more range on one side of the house that had some signal issues.
